Green Rabbit Farms
Mushrooms. Rabbits.
Small Batch Goods and Collaboration
Green Rabbit Farms uses traditional and innovative farming techniques to provide high quality food-as-medicine for their Manitoban community. Through community collaboration, events, partnerships and friendships they advocate and educate on the importance of food sovereignty and supporting our local food systems.
Katy
Katy has been a naturalist and gardener her entire life. After discovering a real passion for growing plants as well as conservation and ecology early in life, she attended Assiniboine Community College where she completed her Diploma of Land and Water Management. It was during her ACC work co-op that she then discovered a need for food security in our own province of Manitoba. After completing her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Biology and Certificate on Non-Profit Sector Leadership and Innovation at the University of Regina, she found herself on the board of directors of two NPO’s working to promote food security in Manitoba and Saskatchewan. Throughout this time she has kept a garden, raised rabbits, and volunteered her time within her community.
“Community involvement in food systems is our only hope to a sustainable food chain and food sovereign nations. Small businesses and NPO’s are the roots of the local food movement. It’s my personal mission to promote the production of healthy local food and encourage those around me to live a sustainable lifestyle.”
Now she devotes almost all of her time into developing Green Rabbit Farms and providing healthy, sustainable food to her community in an Earth conscious way.
Dustin
Dustin is on a lifelong path of exploring his interests. He has never been afraid to invest time, energy and money with intensity and commitment to whatever the endeavour. From the outside it looked a lot like hard work and a series of questionable decisions that took him across the country and away from the status quo.
Since 2013, Dustin has been living and working in the gig economy, which has allowed him to pursue and make (and spend) money doing the things he is interested in. From playing, recording, and helping others produce their music in the studio or on stage, to cooking, catering, and even thai massage.
Dustin had been experimenting with growing mushrooms for a short time before meeting Katy in 2017. Once met by Katy’s fierce conviction in community food security and interests in growing her own food, he decided to commit to studying mushroom production with intentiontions of starting a small business.
“Its always been about exploring interests and just going for it. I think having a farm is one of the most rewarding things you can do. You’re making food and medicine, and you can explore growing whatever you want. People grow plants, crops, worms, freaking christmas trees to make food, wine, medicines and art with them. By committing to this farm, I think I’ve found a lifetimes worth of exploration and purpose filled hard work. This is the best and most rewarding gig i’ve had yet, and I’m looking forward to seeing where the limits are.”
Our History
In 2019 Katy and Dustin moved from Brandon, MB to start their homestead journey and their business. Green Rabbit Farms began as a 15 person CSA and Farmers Market stand (run by Katy) while Dustin renovated a trailer to serve as a mushroom grow facility.
In 2020 Green Rabbit Farms relocated to a one acre lot on Folk Dance Farm, just 5 minutes west of Onanole, MB.
”We enjoy a shared farm scene in which the two farms have formed a strong community (along with other neighbours and local friends) that provides (nearly) everything we need to live healthy sustainable lives. We believe community is at the core of sustainable agriculture.”
Green Rabbit Farms strives to produce a variety of products to keep the farm diverse and healthy. With a focus on food that requires little space compared to outputs, they are always searching for pragmatic ways to reduce the carbon footprint with each aspect of the farm.
